Irish Soda Bread
Quick Bread for St. Patrick's Day
Ingredients
- 1 cup Flour
- 1 tbsp Flour for currants
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1½ tsp kosher salt
- 4 tbsp butter cold, cut into small cubes
- 1¾ cups buttermilk
- 1 tsp grated orange zest optional
- 1 cup dried currants (can use raisins instead)
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375℉
- Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
- Add the butter to the flour mixture slowly.
- Mix the buttermilk, egg and optional orange zest.
- Add the buttermilk mixture slowly to the flour mixture.
- Mix the currants or raisins with the flour.
- Add the currants into the mixture.
- Place the dough onto a floured board or floured pastry board.
- Knead the dough a few times.
- Put the loaf on a baking sheet covered in parchment paper.
- Cut a large X in the top of the loaf with a serrated knife.
- Bake approximately 55 minutes.
