A Simple Brand Guide: The Essentials in One Place

Not every business needs a 16-page brand style guide.

Sometimes you simply need one place to answer the basics: Which logo do I use? What are my colors? Which fonts belong to my business? What should my photos and graphics look like?

That’s where a Brand Essentials Guide comes in.

For this project, I took the Home Girl Homestead identity and condensed it into a simple one-page reference.

The guide includes the pieces used most often when creating everyday marketing materials:

  • Primary logo
  • Alternative logos
  • Brand colors and HEX codes
  • Primary and accent fonts
  • Basic typography guidance
  • Brand imagery and visual direction

Instead of searching through old Canva projects to figure out which shade of green you used—or trying to remember the name of that font you loved—you have one reference to work from.

A brand should have more than one approved logo variation.

Home Girl Homestead has a primary logo along with alternative versions designed for different spaces. A horizontal logo works better in a wide area, while the round version works well when the available space is more compact.

Having these variations ready means you don’t have to stretch, crop, or redesign your logo every time it doesn’t fit.

The guide also documents the visual pieces that make the brand recognizable.

For Home Girl Homestead, that means a primary palette of teal, coral, and warm cream, with golden yellow as an additional accent and black as a supporting neutral.

The typography combines the readability of Noto Serif with the personality of Mistrully, while warm farm and country photography receives a slightly antiqued treatment to help different images feel like they belong together.

Put those decisions in one place, and creating something new becomes much easier.

The goal of a Brand Essentials Guide is to give you the most-used pieces of your brand in one simple, easy-to-reference place.

Your finished guide will bring together your approved:

  • Primary and alternative logos
  • Brand color palette and HEX codes
  • Primary and accent fonts
  • Basic typography guidance
  • Photography and imagery style
  • Key visual elements

This isn’t a generic template that every business receives with a different logo dropped into it. Your guide will be built around your brand and the visual choices that make your business recognizable.

It also isn’t meant to replace a Complete Brand Style Guide. The Essentials Guide skips the lengthy rules, strategy, brand voice, and detailed usage instructions. It’s designed for businesses that need a clear visual reference without all of the extra pages.

Below is the Home Girl Homestead Brand Essentials Guide, created as an example of what you can expect from this service.

It brings the primary and alternative logos, typography, brand colors, and photography direction together on a single page. Instead of digging through old files or guessing which color or font belongs to the brand, the important visual pieces are right there when they’re needed.

Your finished guide will follow the same idea while being designed around the identity, colors, fonts, logos, and visual style of your business.

Simple enough to reference quickly. Detailed enough to keep your brand consistent.
